Great Cornfest!

Posted by Mr. H on Jul 19, 2009 - 09:36 AM  •  Filed under: highschool

THANK YOU to all one hundred participants in the parade this year! The band truly did look and sound about as good as I can remember for the Cornfest Parade! The drumline expecially did great. It was awesome to see so many of you there!

As a reward, I posted the Main Show Audio Files on the site. Now you can follow along in your music and start practicing!

See you soon! Band Camp is in two weeks!

No July 12 Rehearsal!

Posted by Mr. H on Jul 07, 2009 - 07:15 AM  •  Filed under: highschool

There is NOT a rehearsal on July 12.

There was a mistake in the letter that said there would be a rehearsal on "Saturday, July 12" (which obviously is not a Saturday). The headline on that section of the letter is correct.

The rehearsal is Saturday, July 18.

sorry for the typo!

please call your friends that don't read the website and let them know!

Marching Band Softball Challenge

Posted by lil*fegan on Jun 19, 2009 - 04:25 PM  •  Filed under: highschool

On July 18th we are going to have a softball/kickball challenge after our Marching Band rehearsal. There will be two teams, Mr. Heydenburg's and Ms. Schlosser's. We are also hoping to have a cook out, but we will buy food after we collect money from people, so we will be buying the amount of food depending on how many people bring money. Please bring $3 or $4 dollars to cover the food costs. We will be having water and lemonade for beverages, if you would like pop or gatorade you are more than welcome to bring it. The food bought will be hot dogs and maybe nachos and cheese. Please talk to your parents and ask if you can stay longer to enjoy time with other band members. This is also a great way for the freshman to get to know the other members in band, so PLEASE stay and have some fun

Bay Area Summer Wind Ensemble Forming

Posted by Mr. H on Jun 10, 2009 - 02:54 PM  •  Filed under: highschool

The Bay Area Summer Wind Ensemble (Bay City, MI) will serve as a musical outlet and performance opportunity while promoting the area arts and cultural community. Ideally, the ensemble will be comprised of local advanced high school students (whose school programs will be benefited by donations taken at the final concert) as well as college level musicians and area professionals. The concept is for students to sit and perform next to their teachers and give the experienced instrumentalists an opportunity to lead sectionals, masterclasses, etc. A chamber music aspect will be incorporated, allowing those interested to participate in smaller ensembles. There is NO fee to participate.

Check out their website for more information.

St. Pat's Parade Information

Posted by Mr. H on Mar 17, 2009 - 02:09 PM  •  Filed under: highschool
The High School Band will be marching in the Annual Bay City St. Patrick's Day Parade this Sunday, March 22. Students should arrive in uniform with raincoats at the Temple Israel on the corner of Center and Green at 1:15 PM. The parade begins at 2:00 PM. The WHS Band will be #28 in the parade (which is the first band!). Hopefully this means that we will be finishing the parade around 3:00 PM. Parents must pick up their students at the end of the parade. The parade ends at the corner of Water and Center, but it is recommended that parents arrange to meet their students a few blocks from there as traffic is thick at that point. The Band Trailer will be available at the end of the parade to take only percussion equipment and sousaphones. All other students should plan to take their instrument home.

The band room will be open from noon to 12:15 pm on Sunday for anyyone who forgot their instrument. don't be late. Also - despite the weather, we will be marching unless they cancel the whole parade (which never happens). Bring your raincoat! You can wear anything you like under your uniform to keep warm - just as long as we can not see it!

We'll be playing the Fight Song and also Thriller Beginning at measure 9.

School Board Approves New Marching Band Uniforms

Posted by Mr. H on Feb 10, 2009 - 04:59 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
At the BCPS Board of Education meeting on Monday, February 9, 2009 the Board approved purchase of new Marching Band Uniforms for both Western and Central High School Bands. Sample uniforms were displayed and several member of the board asked questions of the band directors present before approving the purchase. While the uniforms may not be exactly as the samples, the final uniforms will be very similar to those presented.

The last time Bay City purchased new marching uniforms was 11 years ago, at that time there was no replacement plan in place and the cost took the district by surprise. Fortunately there was money available then. The district then put a plan in place so that money would be available when the time came to purchase new uniforms again. The District has been setting aside $10,000 per year from the general fund in order to save for band uniforms. The School District has shown tremendous fiscal responsibility in saving general fund money for the purchase of band uniforms on a cyclical basis. Since the implementation of a band uniform savings account the district has also begun similar savings for other replacement needs, two examples being textbooks and furniture.

We are very fortunate to have a school board and administration that support the music program and our needs. I look forward to an exciting marching season this fall showcasing our new uniforms. Click below to view a picture of the sample uniforms.

UPDATE 2/11: Bay City Times article on the board meeting and uniform purchase

There will be a meeting for band parents/alumni for discussion of uniform design on Friday, February 13 @ 6:00 pm

Have you missed out on spending time with your sections since the concert season started? Not feeling as close with your friends?? Try throwing a section party!

Get everyone in your section together to just hang out at a house or go out and do something as a group!

Talk to your section leader and see if you can get something together.

Footnote: let Mr. H know and I'll help spread the word.
