There is also a Video and Audio Slideshow that goes along with the article on www.mlive.com/bctimes. It is really cool, Megan Culberson, Dana G. and Jackie Greene are featured talking about their experiences. Please check it out and give all of the girls involved a round of applause for a job well done!!!

Music, as we have learned in our theory classes, is made up of elements. The compositional process is a wondrous skill of assembling these parts onto a time frame creating a work of art.

Bay City Showdown Itinerary

Posted by Mr. H on Oct 17, 2007 - 09:32 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
The busses will leave Western around 4:30 PM on Friday. Students need to be in full uniform (WITH RAINCOAT) to get on the bus. Please check your hemline as there are several students that have shrunk since uniform inspection and now have their pants hanging below their shoes! (grrr). We will arrive at Central and go directly to their stadium where we will rehearse at 5:00 PM. At about 5:45 we will have some "social time" with the BCC Band ("Get to know me!") in their cafeteria and then line up to march to the field about 6:25. All this will be IN UNIFORM. Following the game, we will be immediately boarding the bus and driving to Auburn. I hope to arrive around 10:00 PM, but this time cannot be guaranteed. Parents - please do not have students call you after they reach Western, have them call you on a cell phone when we leave Central, so you can meet us on time.

Students that would like to ride HOME with their parent must have a note signed by a parent and signed by an administrator and given to me by 2:20 PM on Friday. All students are epxected to ride the bus TO Central. Thanks for your cooperation!

Friday Rehearsal begins at 4:00 PM [UPDATED]

Posted by Mr. H on Sep 26, 2007 - 01:43 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
This Friday's after-school rehearsal will begin at 4:00 PM (instead of 4:30). This is because we could not get a drill rehearsal in on Tuesday night due to lightning and rain. Students that have athletic conflicts are asked to be there as soon as possible (work with your coach) and do not need to make pre-arrangements with Mr. Heydenburg. Thank you for your understanding.

UPDATE: 11:25 AM: Reminder that there is a spaghetti supper fundraiser event on Friday in the WHS Commons. This dinner is a fundraiser for WHS Alum Chad Clark who was involved in a motorcycle accident in July. He has been in the ICU/Trauma Unit at U of M and still remains there today. He has suffered a broken hip, back, wrist, collar bone, scapula, and appears to be paralyzed from the waist down. All Band students are strongly encouraged to help this family by eating supper here on Friday. Please bring your whole family!

Drumline Rehearsal Change

Posted by Mr. H on Sep 04, 2007 - 11:20 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
The Drumline rehearsals have been changed as a result of some conflicts that arose with members and staff. All Drumline rehearsals will now be on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 PM. (The website calendar has been updated to reflect this change). The change was not made lightly and all students were consulted before making the decision. Students were asked to discuss the change with parents before agreeing. Students were given the opportunity to object to the change and there was no objection. Thank you to the parents and students for your flexibilty in the change of the schedule.

Camp Issues

Posted by Mr. H on Jul 27, 2007 - 03:37 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
Medicines: Students are not allowed to self-medicate (prescription and/or non-prescription). A new policy for MDI/EpiPens has been created - students will be able to carry them, but they must still be checked in and usage logged. All medicines (including over-the-counter) should be placed in a ziplock bag with the student's name written on it. Please leave prescriptions in their original container (with the student's name on it, etc.). In the bag, please provide written instructions on how the student should take the medication if it differs from the directions on the bottle. Please turn in the bag to the Camp Nurse when arriving at the bus to leave school (the Nurse - Mrs. Costello - will be standing with Ms. Schlosser). If you have specific health concerns, you may speak with Mrs. Costello about them at that time. (See Medical Policy in our downloads area).

Departure: The busses will leave at 12 noon exactly and will not wait for students to arrive. If a student misses the bus they should drive to camp and meet us there. Plan to assist in the loading of your own bags and instrument between 11:15 and 11:45 AM. Eat Lunch before you arrive at school!

Weather: [Weather Forecast] Please be aware that we take reasonable precautions to account for weather. We will, however, continue to work as much as the weather will allow.

Marching Band Solo Music [updated]

Posted by Mr. H on Jul 21, 2007 - 07:08 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
I have posted music for all the Marching Band solos in our download area. The solos are open to any brass player (except tuba :) ). Auditions will be held during free time at band camp. Students with solos memorized will be given higher consideration. Download them now and start practicing!

UPDATE 7/22: The solos are incorrectly noted as being from "Magical Mystery/Hard Day" When they should say "Eleanor Rigby" - but I'm not redoing them just for that, cause well. I'm lazy. Enjoy. :P

2007 Summer Letters Coming Soon! [Updated]

Posted by Mr. H on Jul 03, 2007 - 09:38 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
The 2007 Summer Letter will be arriving in your snail-mail box early next week. In the meantime, you can check it out early if you like by downloading it from the website. In addition, mailings will go out to all Student Leadership Team Members and Chaperones as well. All of these letters (except Chaperones') are available to download as well. If you do not receive your letter, please make sure you notify me of your changed address. (The letters are addressed to your parents as well, so they may open it first - ask them).

Early next week I will try to post more information including links to the music we will be playing. The seniors are working hard on their show and have made a lot of progress. Check back often for updates!

UPDATE 7/8: I have posted the Senior-Freshman Buddy Assignments, Rank Designators and the (updated) Cabin Assignments. Enjoy!

Regarding Senior Open Houses...

Posted by Mr. H on Jun 07, 2007 - 01:26 PM  •  Filed under: highschool
A couple items here: first, seniors are welcome to submit their open house announcement as a calendar item on the website here if they wish to. Understand that you would be, in effect, inviting anyone who reads this site, but you are still welcome to do that. To do so, find the appropriate date on the calendar and click on the little plus sign for that date. The item will not appear immediately as it must be approved first. Be sure to list an address, but it is not necessary to list a phone, etc.

Second, I would like to thank all of you that have invited me to your open house. Please understand that my family's calendar fills up very quickly for the summer (Grandparents can be very demanding, you know ;) ). It will be impossible for me to attend most of the open houses. Please do not be personally insulted if I can't attend yours, but do attend someone else's. It has nothing to do with how important you are to me and everything to do with how important my family obligations are. I do my best to attend a few and figure I will see most, if not all of you, at those few. I appreciate your understanding!

Female Camp Chaperones Needed!

Posted by Mr. H on Apr 25, 2007 - 09:05 AM  •  Filed under: highschool
I've just finished reviewing the band camp forms that have been turned in to make a list of prospective Chaperones for camp. I've learned that we have more than enough male volunteers, but not even close to enough women! (this is truly unusual!). If your mother is willing to chaperone for band camp, please let me know immediately!

St. Pats Parade Information [updated 3/16 @3pm]

Posted by Mr. H on Mar 15, 2007 - 04:03 PM  •  Filed under: highschool
All High School Band members are expected to meet at the corner of Center and Green (Temple Israel) at 1:15 on Sunday, March 18 for the St. Pat's Parade. Students should arrive in full uniform (please don't wander the community out of uniform) with raincoats. Students are responsible for their own instruments. They should leave their cases in their car.

Parents can pick up their student at the corner of Center and Water (Friendship Shell area) when we finish the parade.

UPDATE 3/16 3:00 PM: We are #49 in the parade - which is pretty early! We should be done with the parade around 3:15 or so (I'm guessing, but that should be close!)

Update 3/16 3:34 pm: I will open the band room on Sunday from NOON until 12:15 for anyone that 'forgot' to pickup their instrument on Friday. The band room will not be open any other time. DO NOT BE LATE.

The trailer will join us in the parade and will carry the large instruments and percussion. Anyone putting their instrument on the trailer is responsible to remove it from the trailer. The trailer will move to Western immediately after the parade.

think warm thoughts!
