The Role of Parents
All parents have taught their children how to speak, how to read, how to write, how to add… they almost seem like natural extensions of our own abilities. As children become students and start to learn more advanced mathematical concepts or grammar or history, most parents find it equally easy to “tutor” their son or daughter in their schoolwork because most parents have studied these subjects in great detail over the course of their own schooling. When it comes to band, however, some - if not most - parents feel inadequate in “helping” their student along in the learning process. Please understand… this is a totally normal and understandable feeling in this situation. In order to combat this uneasy feeling, below is a list of ways that parents can help their child to be successful in band.
Instrument Step-Up Information
The instruments that are rented by most parents are called “beginner’s instruments.” They are called so because they are just that - an instrument built to take the abuse of a beginning student while providing them with a low-cost basic instrument to learn on. However, they frequently are not the best instruments to continue playing on. Students who play in High School Band should strongly consider purchasing a higher quality instrument.

Katie Skrocki, Christy Reder, Nate LaFave, John Magaña, and Katie Miller have all been in band for seven years.
