Some Dismantling Required

Music, as we have learned in our theory classes, is made up of elements. The compositional process is a wondrous skill of assembling these parts onto a time frame creating a work of art.

Getting Serious About Being Positive Is No Contradiction Of Terms

Many researchers have confirmed that “a positive environment is the most conducive for maximum learning results.”

Studying The Full Score Part III

The authors presume that the conductor has been given adequate formal training and now is ready to begin a searching, probing study of the full score, which task is for removed from the ephemeral joy of making music.

Loop 2.4.3 to Perform

Posted by Mr. H on Mar 11, 2008 - 06:22 AM  •  Filed under: fun
The percussion group Loop 2.4.3 will perform in concert at Saginaw Valley University Wednesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. Led by percussionists Thomas Kozumplik and Lorne Watson, they will perform nine compositions off of their debut album “Batterie.”

Lorne was a percussion instructor for Western High School about 10 years ago. I guarantee this will be an awesome concert and there are workshops you can attend too. Great stuff for EVERYONE - not just drummers (or even percussionists!). Consider going.

Straight Ones! (UPDATED)

Posted by Mr. H on Mar 08, 2008 - 06:43 AM  •  Filed under: news
For the first time in Bay City Western's history, all four bands (Seventh, Eighth, HS Concert & HS Symphonic) achieved a First Division rating at MSBOA District 5 Band and Orchestra Festival in their appropriate classification (A and C). Congratulations to all the students that have worked hard (some for many years) to achieve this historic accomplishment. Ms. Schlosser and Mr. Heydenburg are very proud of you and thank you (and your parents) for all you have done and for giving your BEST! Congratulations!

UPDATE: Also of note, Mike Jarema pointed out that both High School Bands have received straight I's from all judges for four years running and he is correct! (I checked my records). That's quite and accomplishment!

Podcasts of all four bands performances are posted in the podast page

Beat The Boom!

Remember those pictures from ancient drum books that taught how to play the concert bass drum? Whether it was some spiffy kid in a sharkskin suit or someone’s grandfather in a bow tie, they showed some techniques that by now should have gone the way of their clothing style.

PRESS RELEASE

JANUARY 16, 2008

From: Western Band Parents Council, Bay City Public Schools, Auburn, MI

Bay City Western Middle and High School Band Program has received $45,000 in grant funding for the Instrument Replacement Grant Funding Project that began in January, 2007. The need for new instruments was identified due to the age and deterioration of many current instruments in the existing inventory, and the remodeling of Western Middle School to include a new band room. Building improvements, including the construction of the new middle school band room and renovation of the existing high school band room were part of the $67 million dollar bond proposal that was passed for the Bay City Public Schools in May 2006.
